CHILDHOOD CLASSICS:100 Years of Children’s Book Illustration

Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts has partnered with Florence-Lauderdale Public Library to present this display of children’s book illustration spanning from turn of the century pen and ink drawings to popular contemporary works, including Garth Williams, Rosemary Wells, Richard Scarry, Beatrix Potter, Maurice Sendak and Hilary Knight. Classic characters including Babar, Eloise, Madeline, the Cat in the Hat, Stuart Little, and Dick and Jane are among those featured in the exhibition.

The exhibition and related programs were made possible through a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, and funding from the Kennedy-Douglass Trust and the Florence-Lauderdale Library Foundation.

Speakers, storytelling and art workshops for both children and adults will be offered at Kennedy-Douglass Art Center and Florence -Lauderdale Public Library free of charge.

This grant signifies that through this project, Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts is making Alabama’s communities stronger and our state’s arts and culture sector more vibrant. Awarded by the Alabama State Council on the Arts, this grant is made possible through funding from an annual appropriation from the Alabama State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. This public support enables Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts to reach new audiences, foster community development, provide the highest quality programming, and demonstrate the importance of arts as a key component for quality of life in Alabama.

The Council on the Arts is the official state agency for the support and development of the arts in Alabama.
