Pope’s Tavern Archaeology Club is hosting a Public Archaeology Day on Saturday, October 21st, 2022, from 10:00-3:00 at Pope’s Tavern Museum, 203 Hermitage Drive, Florence, AL. People of all ages are invited to participate in activities and be able to excavate, process, and interpret artifacts. Stations will be set up with activities around excavation, artifact cleaning, sorting and identification, and collections strategies. Students under 18 must have guardian supervision.

This event is part of International Archaeology Day, which is a celebration of archaeology and its contributions to society. Every October the Archaeological Institute of America and archaeological organizations around the world present archaeological programs and activities for people of all ages and interests.

Pope’s Tavern Museum is a museum dedicated to the early (1800-1870) history of Florence and Lauderdale County. The Museum has recently contracted with the University of Alabama to continue archaeological testing at the Museum, after a 2021 archaeological dig unearthed over 300 artifacts. The program is free and is sponsored by the City of Florence Department of Arts and Museums.
