"La Femme" | Ann Moeller Steverson

  • Florence Arts and Museums 217 East Tuscaloosa Street Florence, AL, 35630 United States (map)

Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts will be showing an exhibition of works by artist Ann Moeller Steverson from January 6 through February 3, 2023.  The artist will present a gallery talk on Sunday, January 15th from 2 p.m.-3 p.m.  Ann Moeller Steverson is an oil painter known for her mood-filled figures, portraits, and still-life’s.  Her contemporary work bridges classical beauty with modern painting practices of today.  Steverson has been awarded the honor of the Bold Brush Award, a distinction an artist may receive only once in their lifetime.  Her work has recently been selected as a finalist in the Art Renewal Center and has been featured in several Oil Painters of America exhibits.  She has been awarded by the National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society and Portrait Society of America.

A native of Madison, Alabama, Steverson began painting in oils at the University of Montevallo in 1999.  She graduated in 2002 from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, completing a B.A. with a Fine Arts concentration.  Steverson then acquired a Master of Art Education from Alabama A&M University in Normal, AL.  She exhibits her work nationally and internationally and soon will have several of her works included in the Peregrine Collection via which they will be archived on the moon.

Of her work, Steverson says, “I hope my art can be a conduit of healing in our world.  Sensing the beauty in the world around me has always called me to create.  My oil paintings have become expressions of humanity, femininity, and intense moods.  I reach into my whole heart and share the best of everything I see, therefore offering my most authentic self.  Approaching oil painting as an intuitive meditation becomes like a dance.  The fluidity and malleability of the paint align with the openness I feel as I work.  I have begun to paint with more abstraction, in combination with realism, searching for marriage and balance between the two.”

The Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts is free and open to the public Monday - Friday from 9-4 and on Sundays from 1-4. The art center is located at 217 E. Tuscaloosa St. Florence, AL and can be reached at 256-760-6379.
