Pope’s Tavern Museum will host a JUNIOR ARCHAEOLOGY DAY on Saturday, June 8th 2024 from 9am until 2pm.
Junior Archaeology Day will give anyone interested an opportunity to excavate, sift, clean, and sort artifacts at different stations throughout the Pope’s Tavern archaeological site. Everyone is welcome to come and learn more about archaeology and participate in an archaeological excavation. In addition, we will be hosting the following activities alongside the archaeological stations:
Artifact Drawing workshop with Kurt Vetters from 9-10. Learn how to sketch artifacts like the ones found at Pope’s Tavern. All materials provided.
Plant Identification 101 with Summer McCreless from 10-11. Learn how to identify, harvest respectfully, and use plants, and how they were used in the past.
Blacksmith Demonstration with Ken Durham from 11-12. Watch a demonstration about how blacksmiths create metal tools.
Flintknapping with Bill Skinner from 12-1. Learn how Native Americans made projectile points, arrowheads and tools from chert.
This will be a FREE and FUN event for the entire family! Moundville Archaeological Park’s Education Department and Florence Arts and Museums will be facilitating this free program along with volunteers from the Archaeology at Pope’s Tavern project. The University of Alabama Museums’ Moundville Archaeological Park is one of the largest and most widely-studied archaeological sites in the state of Alabama.
