JUNIOR ARCHAEOLOGY DAY AT POPE’S TAVERN

Pope’s Tavern Museum is hosting the 2nd annual Junior Archaeology Day on Saturday, June 17th, 2023, from 9:00-3:00 at Pope’s Tavern Museum, 203 Hermitage Drive, Florence, AL. Students K-12 are invited to participate in activities and people of all ages are welcome to attend. Students will be guided by archaeologists and have an opportunity to excavate, process, and interpret artifacts. Stations will be set up for people to come and go throughout the day. Water, popsicles, and a cooling station are provided. Students under 18 must have guardian supervision. Moundville Archaeological Park’s Education Department will be facilitating this program, along with representatives from the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the University of North Alabama’s Public History Program, and Pope’s Tavern Archaeology Club.

Pope’s Tavern Museum is museum dedicated to the early (1800-1870) history of Florence and Lauderdale County. The Museum has recently contracted with the University of Alabama to continue archaeological testing at the Museum, after a 2021 archaeological dig unearthed over 300 artifacts. This program is free and is sponsored by the City of Florence Department of Arts and Museums, with support from the Alabama Historical Commission.
