Pope’s Tavern “Slavery in the Shoals” Project Wins Prestigious 2022 AASLH Award of Excellence

Nashville, TN – The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) congratulates Pope’s Tavern for receiving an Award of Excellence for its “Slavery in the Shoals Exhibit.” The Award of Excellence is part of the AASLH Leadership in History Awards, the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation of state and local history.

From Pope’s Tavern: “We are honored to receive this award on behalf of the Shoals community. With great humility and respect, we acknowledge that untold stories have great power when they are shared. We remain grateful to our community collaborators and city leaders for their support with this project, and are indebted to artist Valerie S. Goodwin for her work, ‘In the Name of King Cotton,’ on permanent display in the exhibit. We want to also thank Nadene Mairesse for conceptualizing the design of the exhibit and identifying community collaborators. We acknowledge our obligation to continue the work of telling untold stories and creating a community space for learning, listening, and healing.”
